While reading the transcript for Geary’s TED talk the second time, I didn’t really notice anything different. But I did build a connection between the very first line, “metaphor lives a secret life all around us”. I compared metaphors to mental illnesses. Mental illnesses are everywhere, but you cannot see them, just like metaphors. Geary uses metaphors more as his thought process when explaining something, rather than just saying it. This is helpful when you don’t really know the words for what you want to say but know how you feel about the matter. Using metaphors to explain something creates a new feeling and connection to the matter of discussion that may not have been there before. Being upfront about something can be difficult to gain the emotion from it that you were initially looking or hoping for.
