Four areas from the rubric that provide me with the greatest learning opportunity are watching out for island paragraphs, achieving the assigned word count, clearly articulating how my evidence relates my claim, and making sure that my position statement is sustainable.

While doing a peer review, it made me realize that I added part of a paragraph that didn’t necessarily flow with the rest of it. In a way, it was almost like an island paragraph just chunked into another paragraph. I think that I can look out for more of these by making sure that everything just flows together and doesn’t break off in its own direction.

I have an issue with being able to write the correct amount for an essay when it has an assigned word count. I’m usually close to it but don’t always hit the mark. A way to improve this would be for me to elaborate more within my statements.

When it comes to relating my evidence to my claim, I sometimes will stray from it. I can work on connecting all of my evidence to each other and then fully back to my claim. While collecting evidence, I should stick more to looking for specifics things that make my claim more prominent.

My position in an essay isn’t always that sustainable so I need to work on that. I tend to drift from my main argument and hit on other smaller ideas that are only partly related to it. I’ll need to pay more attention when choosing evidence to support my claim in order to aid in making my position more sustainable.

  1. I think it’s great that you connected with the “island paragraph” metaphor. Continue to check back with the rubric as your writing skills develop and your needs continue to change.
